What is an Emergency Kit?

This is a collection of items to help you make it through a natural disaster or other emergencies. It should be all together in a bag and ready to grab and go at a moment's notice.

You never know when a tsunami, earthquake, or other disasters may strike. Assemble a kit now so that you are ready for the next emergency!

What You Will Need

Basic Kit

If you are living in the hales or similar single student housing, we recommend that you get started with a small, simple kit to grab and go in the case of a fire, earthquake, or tsunami.

• 1 gallon(~4 liters) of bottled water.
• A day of nonperishable, ready-to-eat food items (granola bars, spam/Vienna sausage, instant ramen, peanut butter).
• Warm clothing or a rain coat.
• Important documents (passport, ID cards, social security).

Intermediate Kit

To be prepared for a longer-term disaster (such as a hurricane, or long-term power outage).

• 3 gallons of bottled water and three days worth of nonperishable food.
• Warm clothing and spare clothes.
• Prescription medicine and a small first aid kit.
• Important documents.
• Personal hygiene items (toothbrush, toilet paper, feminine care, hand sanitizer).
• Diapers and baby formula (if you have infants in your home)

Ready Kit

Hawaii Emergency Management Association (HI-EMA) and the Hawaii Department of Health (DoH) recommended kit contents. A good container for these could be a suitcase or roller cooler. Read a full list of recommended items on the HDOH website.

• 14 days of drinking quality water and nonperishable food (1 gallon/person/day).
• Clothing and bedding, good boots, sleeping bag, diapers for infants.
• Full first-aid kit (with non-prescription medications).
• Prescription medications for at least 14 days.
• Flashlight, crank, or battery-powered radio.
• Important documents.
• Eating utensils.
• Can opener.
• Personal hygiene items.
• Diapers and baby formula.
• Personal entertainment (books, playing cards, etc)
